Status Update Interview Series #3 – Flint Police Operations
Recorded: Thursday April 5, 2012
Guest: Kat VanSickle, Secretary and an Executive Board Member for Flint Police Operations
Flint is consistently ranked as one of the most dangerous cities in the country. Unfortunately, with a down economy, the city faces a budget crunch, which means like most large cities around the United States, Flint is not staffing as many police officers as they’d like.
The group Flint Police Operations wants to help alleviate the crime problem in Flint. The group, staffed by 20 volunteers, listens to police and emergency scanners for the Flint area and relays the information over social media to some 27,000 followers. The group’s Secretary Kat VanSickle talks about how the organization started and how they harness the power of social media to mobilize the people of Flint against crime.
You can follow the Flint Police Operations group on Twitter (@FlintPoliceOps) and Facebook. You can also read their blog which has more in-depth information about ongoing crime in the Flint area.
